The Institute of Air Transport, Sofia, Bulgaria, was founded 30 Years ago as an integral part of that time State Corporation “Civil Aviation” to serve the needs of Bulgaria’s Civil Aviation sector in the  field of research, development and consultancy.

It kept this status untill 1991, when the Corporation was split and restructured and the Institute acquired economic and legal autonomy.

Our premices are situated at the Airport Sofia area, next door to ATC and BALKAN Airlines buildings. We have  30   own personnel and employ  about 45 instructors and some consultants on a  part time basis.

In the recent years the Institute elaborates drafts of regulatory acts and by-laws, airlines’ basic documents (e.g. Flight operation manuals), projects of small airfields for the general aviation needs, aircraft and other tangible assets appraisals, conducts environmental impact  studies related to the air transport and airports.

It also provides consulting services to Bulgarian air carriers and to foreign companies operating in the Bulgarian aviation market, investment consultancy to potential foreign investors in the airports and air transport development.

The Institute is a partner in a Bulgarian  registered J.V. company (Arrow Ltd – construction and design supervision and surveillance) with English and Dutch participation.

Beside this activity, the Institute built up a Civil Aviation Training Center, with well equiped class rooms, technical aids, library, simulator  for cabin crew training.

The Center has been found by the Bulgarian Civil Aviation Authority competent to provide training of aviation  personnel in compliance  with the Civil Aviation Act of the Republic of Bulgaria and the Ordinance 27 of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Currently, the Center is licensed to conduct in compliance with its  CAA approved programs  more than 140 different kinds of courses. These include basic, refresher and type-conversion training of cockpit and cabin crew and maintenance  personnel for several types of commercial aircraft and CRM training  for cockpit crew as  well.

In fact, the Center now serves the needs of the Bulgarian air carriers , general aviation companies and of individuals aimed to jobs in this field. Among the clients of the Center are  also carriers from Hungary, Albania, Croatia.
